Relative vs Absolute Dating. Dating is a technique used in archeology to ascertain the age of artifacts, fossils and other items considered to be valuable by archeologists. Relative dating or absolute dating are many methods employed by these scientists, interested in the old, to get to know the age of items. It is possible to tell the number of years ago a particular rock or archeological site had been formed. Two broad categories of classification methods are relative dating and absolute dating. Though using similar methods, these two techniques differ in certain ways that will be discussed in this article. As the name implies, relative dating can tell which of the two artifacts is older.

Although both relative and absolute dating methods are used to estimate the age of historical remains, the results produced by both these techniques for the same sample may be ambiguous. Geological specimens that are unearthed need to be assigned an appropriate age. To find their age, two major geological dating methods are used.
The main difference between absolute and relative dating is that the absolute dating is a technique to determine the numerical age of a rock or a fossil whereas the relative dating is a technique that determines the relative age. Furthermore, absolute dating can be done with the use of radiometric dating while relative age is determined with respect to other layers. The four techniques used in absolute dating are radiometric relative dating or absolute dating, amino acid dating, dendrochronology, and thermoluminescence. It is a less advanced technique when compared to absolute dating.

More about relative dating or absolute dating:
Geologists often need to know the age of material that they find. They use absolute dating methods, sometimes called numerical dating, to give rocks an actual date, or date range, in number of years. This is different relative dating or absolute dating relative dating, which only puts geological events in time order. Most absolute dates for rocks are obtained with radiometric methods. These use radioactive minerals in rocks as geological clocks. The atoms of some chemical elements have different forms, called isotopes. These break down over time in a process scientists call radioactive decay.
In the field of Geology, dating is an important term as it is a technique through which evaluation regarding the age and period about the fossil, remains, the archaeologists do valuables and artifacts. At relative dating or absolute dating, there were not many methods of dating were available, but now with advancement in the technology, we mainly have two types of techniques to ascertain ages of ancient belongings. Relative Dating and Absolute Dating are two types of such techniques which are under practice to determine the age of the fossils, objects or civilizations. The relative dating is the technique in the Geology through which the age is determined with relation to the other objects. In other words, we can say that in relative dating the archaeologist determines that which of the two fossil or the artifacts are older. Contrary to this, absolute dating is the technique, using which the exact age of the artifacts, fossils, or sites are ascertained. The relative dating is the technique to ascertain the age of the artifacts, rocks or even sites while comparing one from the other. In relative dating the exact age of the object is not known; the only thing which made clear using this is that which of the two artifacts is older.
Both relative dating and absolute dating are tools used to give temporal characteristics to a sequence of events. Both are attempting to get information on the history of events. The primary difference is that absolute dating assigns an actual time or age to an relative dating or absolute dating or object. Relative dating simply says one is older than the other but no age is specified.
